It depends on the fire department where you apply, it may take a while before you can become a firefighter. For instance, many departments hire every year, but others hire every four or five months. It is possible that you will need to complete a year's training and then a probationary period.

Your training will teach you how to respond in different situations and how to use different equipment. You will also be taught about fire science and life-saving procedures. You will also learn how to use a fire hose. You will also practice emergency response skills using simulations. A variety of written and physical tests will be taken.

Along with learning the intricacies, firefighters must also develop a certain mindset. Fire departments need people with a strong work ethic who can learn from past errors. Online and offline, you will need to have a good public reputation.

Although there are no time limits on how long a fire academy program should take, most fire departments require at minimum 600 hours of training. There are also specialization programs that will extend your training time. An example is a bachelor's or associate's degree in fire suppression, fire science, or fire science. Depending upon the program that you choose, this can increase your career by two to four additional years.

You may be required to take a physical examination test before you are admitted to the fire academy. It will assess your strength and agility as well other physical abilities. It is often called the Candidate Physical Ability Test. Also, you must pass a psychological screening. The firefighter tasks you must complete in 10 minutes or less will also be required. These tasks include stair climbing, dragging a hose, pulling a ceiling breach, and searching.

A written exam will be required to show that you can read basic problems and solve them. A polygraph test may be required. These tests are becoming an increasingly important part of background investigations.

Although fire departments typically hire in groups, you can apply to an individual department. Many agencies will accept applicants with a high school diploma. If you are looking to further your career, you can pursue a bachelor's or associate's level degree.
